You are probably thinking I am mad talking about fossil hunting during the winter months, but it is the perfect time of year for it, as stormy weather churns up the beaches exposing the fossils from the rocks and the cliffs. Dorset is famous for being the home of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site which stretches from Studland Bay in Dorset westwards towards Exmouth in East Devon, a distance of approximately 96 miles. The Jurassic Coast by Air and Foot

A couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to go on a helicopter flight over the Jurassic coast, an amazing experience which I highly recommend. Being just half an hour long, it didn’t go all the way along the 96 mile coastline, instead concentrating on the area heading east from Exmouth along the Lyme Bay coastline to Lyme Regis and Charmouth and back again. Dorset is my home county and we love to explore our local beaches, many of which are situated on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage site which stretches from Old Harry Rocks in Swanage 95 miles west to Orcombe Point in East Devon, but this does not include the 7 miles of sandy beach which stretches from Sandbanks, Poole, past Bournemouth and all the way to Hengistbury Head and Mudeford Spit in Christchurch.
