A blustery visit to Cabo da Roca

Lighthouse Cabo Da Roca

Whilst researching our break in Portugal I made a list of all the things we wanted to see and do. One of those things was to visit Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for the colourful Pena Palace, Castle of the Moors, Palacio Quinta da Regaleira and Monserrate Palace and about a half an hour taxi ride from where we were staying at in Cacais. With the focus on the stunning historical palaces, it is easy to miss that the most western point of mainland Europe lies within the Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais, so I made sure that a visit… Continue Reading “A blustery visit to Cabo da Roca”

Martinhal Chiado – the perfect base for a family holiday in Lisbon

Over half term we were lucky enough to spend a few days in Lisbon, Portugal with Martinhal Resorts. We split our time in Lisbon between two of their family friendly resorts, Martinhal Cacais on the coast,  and Martinhal Chiado, in the city itself. As you might expect, the two resorts offer very different breaks, but both were perfectly suited to family travel and offered all the home from home comforts that you need when travelling with children. Martinhal Chiado is the world’s first city centre family hotel, situated in the old town and offers a real “WOW” factor as soon as you walk through… Continue Reading “Martinhal Chiado – the perfect base for a family holiday in Lisbon”

Meeting Dippy on his visit to Dorset County Museum

Dippy on Tour

Regular readers of my blogs will know that Sebastian is dinosaur mad and we often plan our days out around his favourite subject. Like many children his age, Sebastian can rattle off the scientific names of dozens of dinosaurs, tell you what they looked like, what they ate and where they lived, so when we discovered Dippy was going on tour and his first stop was our home county, we just had to go and see him. Dippy, the much-loved Diplodocus skeleton cast that held centre stage at the Natural History Museum in London was replaced with a blue whale… Continue Reading “Meeting Dippy on his visit to Dorset County Museum”

The Highway Rat Trail at Moors Valley

The Highway Rat

One of our highlights of Christmas day was watching the Highway Rat on BBC. The beautifully animated film, produced by Magic Pictures, is a swashbuckling adventure of bandits and biscuits, written by the UK’s best-selling author Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. Since the film aired we have watched it several times and the book is also a firm favourite, especially with Sebastian. For more Highway Rat fun, the Forestry Commission have teamed with Magic Light pictures to launch The Highway Rat’ Activity Trails around the country, with our closest one being at Moors Valley Country Park. Visitors to the trail can… Continue Reading “The Highway Rat Trail at Moors Valley”

Not to miss events in Dorset this February Half Term

Teddy Zip Wire

My 10 things to do in Dorset during February Half Term post from last year is proving very popular as parents try to decide what to do with their little and not so little ones this time of year and is still relevant, but there are lots of fun local events happening too. 1. Dippy on Tour The Natural History Museum’s famous Diplodocus skeleton cast, known as Dippy, is touring the UK this year and his first… Continue Reading “Not to miss events in Dorset this February Half Term”
