Martinhal Chiado – the perfect base for a family holiday in Lisbon

Over half term we were lucky enough to spend a few days in Lisbon, Portugal with Martinhal Resorts. We split our time in Lisbon between two of their family friendly resorts, Martinhal Cacais on the coast,  and Martinhal Chiado, in the city itself. As you might expect, the two resorts offer very different breaks, but both were perfectly suited to family travel and offered all the home from home comforts that you need when travelling with children. Martinhal Chiado is the world’s first city centre family hotel, situated in the old town and offers a real “WOW” factor as soon as you walk through… Continue Reading “Martinhal Chiado – the perfect base for a family holiday in Lisbon”

Searching for Santa at Santa’s Lapland

Searching for Santa at Santa's Lapland

Day two of our three-day trip to Saariselkä was our Search for Santa day. We were given our coach times the day before we left and we were one of the first to arrive for our day that promised to be packed full of fun. Tucked in our pockets were our magic tickets (the kids letters to Santa, that we had “posted” a few weeks previously) and the timings for our husky rides, the only set time given on the day. The rest of the day we could do whatever took our fancy. We arrived to a covering of fresh snow… Continue Reading “Searching for Santa at Santa’s Lapland”

What to pack for a holiday to Lapland

Lapland

Visiting Lapland with the kids to meet Father Christmas has been top of my bucket list for the last few years. It is recommended not to take babies and toddlers as the weather is extremely cold outside, generally around -12ᶜ and sometimes as low as -30ᶜ this time of year, so we have been waiting until Sebastian is old enough to enjoy it too. If you are travelling to Lapland with an organised tour they may provide some of your kit, including a thermal outer-suit made for Arctic conditions, cosy woollen socks, snow-boots, outer gloves and a hat. The key… Continue Reading “What to pack for a holiday to Lapland”

Jedi Training Academy at Walt Disney World

Jedi Training

Star Wars is a big thing at Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World. You can embark on Star Wars adventures with the 3D motion-simulated Star Tours ride; visit Star Wars locations; meet Star Wars characters, including Kylo Ren, BB8 and Chewbacca; view Star Wars movie props and shop for Star Wars merchandise in several locations around the park. Hubby has been Star Wars mad since he was a child and has passed on his love of the movies to all the kids, so one of our must do activities at Disney was to sign up to the Jedi Training Academy: Trials of the Temple. The training academy is free to… Continue Reading “Jedi Training Academy at Walt Disney World”

Exploring the Lake District with HF Holidays

Exploring the Lake District with HF Holidays

We love exploring when we are on holiday, but our trips are always self-guided, so were keen to try something a little more organised. We have just returned from a fabulous break in the Lake District with HF Holidays who have over 100 years of experience organising guided walking holidays, self guided walking breaks as well as inspiring leisure and activity breaks in the UK, Europe and worldwide. We stayed at Monk Coniston, a beautiful property, once owned by Beatrix Potter and leased from the National Trust. It is set on the shores of Coniston Water, made famous by the… Continue Reading “Exploring the Lake District with HF Holidays”

Best Foodie Destinations for a Family Holiday

French Bakery

Family holidays are often when the best family memories are made. As much as they can be a bit of a hassle to organise, and of course with kids involved there’ll no doubt be at least one tantrum (I won’t specify if that’s the kids or parents!) Often one cause of contention when on holiday is finding somewhere to eat which allows the adults (and braver kids) to try the delicious local cuisine, but where younger family members can eat something they like, and where babies and excited kids won’t be met with tutting and disapproving looks if the kids… Continue Reading “Best Foodie Destinations for a Family Holiday”

My Top 10 Posts of 2016

Omaha Beach

I always find it fascinating looking at my stats and seeing which posts have been the most popular in the last year – it is rarely the ones you think it will be and this year is no exception. I enjoy researching travel almost as much as travelling itself and it looks as though I am not alone. 1. My top post this year was a bucket list post for visiting Thailand and I have to say that looking back, I can see why as the images draw you in and whisk you off to a warmer climate. 2. My second most… Continue Reading “My Top 10 Posts of 2016”

Visiting Mallorca on a Budget

Family holidays mean a lot to us and being a larger than average family they can get quite pricey, especially in the school holidays. I am always on the lookout for good deals on flights and accommodation and it is surprising just how much you can save by booking early or being flexible around your dates of travel. Another great way of saving is to rent an apartment or villa although that does mean you will have to cook your own meals, however nothing beats a barbecue around the pool on a warm summer’s evening. Having not yet visited the island… Continue Reading “Visiting Mallorca on a Budget”
